When time pauses

When time pauses

Notes from the field

written for 2011 New Year's greeting

When time all of a sudden pauses and motion inescapably grinds to a halt. At a red light, in a waiting room, on a plane seat, a space in time, an interval slipping on a slope with no particular aim allows the mind – possibly because it relaxes and lets go, certainly because doing so is in its nature – to dismiss the urgent. All you have to do is let go to wind up in familiar surroundings, frozen in your memory, or made over and idealised. Daydreams open up a realm for things that want to stay alive, for images, faces, sounds and feelings to side-step the normal course of events and surface in a different light. Because, when you catch up with your thoughts again, something will have changed.
